A gastropod fauna from the Cravenoceras hesperium ammonoid zone (Upper Mississippian) in east-central Nevada

Mackenzie Gordon, and Ellis L. Yochelson

U. S. Geol. Surv., Washington, DC, United States

Weathered pockets in a pebbly limestone bed less than half a meter thick, in the upper part of the Diamond Peak Formation, have yielded a well-preserved gastropod fauna containing 26 species, of which 3 genera and 12 species are here described as new. These fossils are in five collections made on a small hill at the northern margin of the White Pine Range in White Pine County, Nevada. Cravenoceras hesperium Miller and Furnish, which characterizes the ammonoid zone of the same name, occurs with the gastropods. The pebbly limestone was deposited in relatively shallow water on the east side of the Antler orogenic belt. The gastropod fauna is similar to that of a large limestone lens in the upper part of the Chainman Shale at Willow Gap in the Confusion Range, western Utah.--Modified journal abstract.
