Ungdarella americana, a new red alga from the Pennsylvanian of southeastern New Mexico
Donald Francis Toomey, and J. Harlan Johnson
A new red algal species, Ungdarella americana Toomey and Johnson, is described from Middle Pennsylvanian subsurface rocks of southeastern New Mexico. It is colonial, cylindrical, delicately branched, and has ball-like branch tips. Possibly it represents a new type of growth pattern. Ungdarella is geographically widespread and ranges stratigraphically from the Mississippian to the Upper Permian. This is the first report of the genus in the Western Hemisphere.
