Examination of the original material of the crossopterygian fish Panderichthys (Devonian, USSR) confirms that two pairs of external nares and a pars ethmoidalis cranialis are present in the snout. This 'intermediate' structure demonstrates the artificiality of any classification of the Rhipidistia into two widely separated lineages.
