Some observations and impressions on paleontology in the Soviet Union

Joseph St. Jean

Soviet paleontologists have made significant advances in the use of obscure Precambrian fossils in stratigraphic correlation and in the study of Carboniferous smaller foraminifera. Equipment is somewhat outmoded but research scientists have the advantage of excellently trained technical assistants. Centralized research and the pressures for completion of projects have some advantages, but unforeseen problems are given insufficient attention. As in any part of the world, the quality of the work depends on the quality of the individual paleontologist.
