Early Triassic (Scythian) ammonoids from northwestern Washington

W. David Kuenzi

. . . The Kelly Hill fauna is entirely molluscan and is characterized by the ammonoids Owenites Koeneni, Juvenites sp. cf. J. septentrionalis and Dieneroceras sp. cf. D. dieneri. Elsewhere, these species are restricted to the Meekoceras gracilitatis Zone of mid-Scythian (Owenitan) age. The Kelly Hill fauna establishes for the first time the existence of Lower Triassic rocks in the northwestern Cordillera. The seaway that occupied the area of the eastern Great Basin and middle Rocky Mountains during the latter part of Early Triassic time probably extended northward over parts of eastern Oregon and western Idaho into northeastern Washington and possibly was continuous with the Early Triassic sea of western and Arctic Canada.
