First record of avian fossils from the Eocene of California

The recovery of two avian bones from the Eocene of San Diego, California marks the first recording of bird life in California prior to the Miocene. A new species Protostrix californiensis (Order Strigiformes) is described, and the Order Gruiformes tentatively recorded.
