The southernmost occurrence of Elphidiella hannai (Cushman and Grant), 1927, off the west coast of North America

Johanna M. Resig

A modern southern limit of the inner shelf foraminifer Elphidiella hannai has been located north of Point Dume, southern California. Pleistocene deposits contain the species as far south as Cedros Island, Baja California. A northward migration of more than 6 degrees latitude is indicated since Pleistocene time. Regional temperature controls probably affect the Recent distribution, but there is no marked temperature discontinuity in the area of the present southern limit. Maximum surface temperature tolerated is about 20 degrees C.
