Dentiblastus; a new blastoid genus from the Burlington Limestone (Mississippian)

A new spiraculate blastoid genus, Dentiblastus, is proposed. The type species, Pentremites sirius White, from the Burlington Limestone of Burlington, Iowa, and Louisiana, Mo., was previously classified under the fissiculate genus Orophocrinus. An unusual and distinctive character is the secondary deposition of calcite to form a radial prong, thus extending the length of the ambulacrum. Carpenteroblastus stella (Rowley) is a junior synonym of D. sirius. Some isolated radials with prongs from the Mississippian of Kentucky, previously placed in Orophocrinus, are discussed; their taxonomic position is considered uncertain.
