The natural relationships of some Carboniferous microspores
Grace S. Brush, and E. S. Barghoorn
Microspores were isolated from Carboniferous fructifications; the spores represent forms encountered occasionally to frequently in Carboniferous coal seams. Spores are described from fruiting structures of Sphenophyllostachys, Calamostachys, Macrostachya, Sphenostrobus, Alloiopteris, Ptychocarpus, Asterotheca, Botryopteris, Crossotheca, and Whittleseya, and correlation is proposed for these microfossils taxonomically with their respective organ genera and species. Spores from a single fructification may vary in size, suggesting maturation at varying rates.
