Pyritization of spiralia in the Middle Devonian brachiopod Athyris spiriferoides (Eaton)

Specimens of Athyris spiriferoides from the Ludlowville Formation of the Hamilton Group in western New York when etched in dilute hydrochloric acid revealed spiralia replaced by pyrite. These specimens provide a 3-dimensional picture helpful in understanding the location and form of the brachidium within the shell.
